STORY

Far away from the city, Johnny and Brianne suddenly find themselves in a violent storm. In the distance, they see an old run-down church, which would serve well as protection from the rain. The rain is lashing down as they run there, and the sky lights up by the constant flashes of lightning.

Brianne: I'd better get out of these wet clothes...
Johnny: Hey, let's go up the belfry so we can get a good nice view of the storm!

They start climbing up the belfry. The view of the landscape is impressive, and the thunder makes them shiver.

Brianne: Oh, I LOVE the rain!!! It's SOOO beautiful!!!
Johnny: Not as beautiful as your... as you, Brianne!
Brianne: Oh, Johnny! Take me!
Johnny: YES!!!
Brianne: Hurry up already before I'm kidnapped by evil demons from hell or something!

Suddenly, evil demons from hell come out from the dark and kidnap Brianne! They quickly disappear with her down the belfry, before Johnny even has a chance to react. A second later, the roof is struck by the lightning, and starts to collapse! Johnny has no choice but to run down the collapsing belfry, in pursuit of the demons.

SETTINGS

Use the up [^] and down [v] arrow keys to step through the menu, and use space [------] to toggle through the options.

Full screen: Toggles between window mode and full screen mode.
Parallax scrolling and Lightning: Can be turned off if you get dizzy.
Stabilize: If you experience tearing, this option will sync the rendering speed with the screen speed. On slow screens ( < 60 Hz) this option should be left off, or it may produce timing errors.

Go to: When you have finished a level, you can use the left [<] and right [>] arrow keys to skip directly to that level. Use space [------] to start a new game at the highlighted level. Observe that in order to get the highest possible score, you have to play all the levels in one go, though.

Begin: starts a new game from the first level.
Exit: Quits the game.

HOW TO PLAY

You control Johnny on his way down through shady depths, to rescue his beloved Brianne. Starting at the top of the belfry of an old church, you navigate down through the belfry to the crypt, then onwards through the depths. Infact, saving Brianne is not the only reason he wants to go down there - the debris from the collapsing building falling down from above him is kind of motivating too.

CONTROLS

You control Johnny using the left [<] and right [>] arrow keys. Use escape [esc] to pause during the game. Jump downwards from platform to platform to avoid getting mashed by the falling roof. Don't jump too fast though; if Johnny jumps off the screen, he won't survive the fall.

Johnny will encounter a variety of different platforms, but we'll leave it to you and him to discover them together. There are some objects that he should avoid, such as sharp spikes, falling rocks, deadly monsters and other harmful things. They will make Johnny lose some life. Each time he lands on a harmless platform or picks up some food, he will gain a little energy. If Johnny runs out of energy, he dies (d'uh).

ABOUT THE GAME

This game is an entry in the 72hour Game Development Contest (http://www.72hourcompo.com), summer 2005. The basic preset is that people team up three and three, and have a tight 72 hours to make a full game. This is version 1.0 which we are submitting for judging (as I type this there is roughly one hour left until the deadline), but there will most likely be updates released later on at http://72h.regna.nu/ .
